Teaching and learning glossary

Your university account and email address

You have a university account that is used to access all university services. Your login will consist of:

• Your university email address, made up of your first name initial, surname, a number and the domain name @uni.brighton.ac.uk. For example: a.surname1@uni.brighton.ac.uk.
• You will also be given a username, consisting of your initials and a number e.g. abc1.

You can find your university email inbox on My 麻豆果冻传媒. You will need to check your university inbox regularly so you don’t miss important information and updates

Accessing wifi on campus

To access the wifi on campus, select eduroam from the list of networks on your device. The log in credentials are a bit different to your normal university log in.

You have to enter your university username and @ university domain: for example, abc1@brighton.ac.uk.

Click continue/connect/trust/accept if asked.

Your unicard

If you’re living in university halls, your unicard will be ready to pick up when you arrive. Otherwise you can collect it from your campus’ Student Support Desk.

You are expected to carry your unicard with you whilst on campus, and you will need your unicard to:

• access buildings, teaching spaces and access computers
• borrow books and resources from the library
• gain student discounts
• register your attendance at lectures and seminars via the attendance monitoring system.

You can also load money on your unicard to pay for food and rink from our cafes and restaurants, and photocopying/printing.

My Studies - virtual learning environment (VLE)

My Studies is our virtual learning environment (VLE). It is a secure online space for students to access learning materials, assessment and other study related activities.

You can access My Studies through the My 麻豆果冻传媒 portal after you register. After logging into My 麻豆果冻传媒, click on the Studies tab, then the My Studies tile. This will take you to your course and module areas, where more new student information will be available on starting your course.

New students can access My Studies one day after their online registration.

Lecture capture

We record lectures wherever possible to support your learning. As well as being able to see sessions that you had to miss, it means that you’ll be able to rewatch at your own pace, revisit any difficult bits and make more notes as you prepare for assessments and exams.

Our goal is that lectures should be recorded where possible – this could be all or part of a teaching session where a lecturer makes a presentation to a group of students online on MS Teams or in person. At a minimum it will be an audio recording of the lecture.

We'll let you know if the lecture is being recorded at the start of the session. Where it is not possible to record because of the style of the session, copyright or other reasons, we will let you know and provide alternative materials, for example annotated lecture slides. 

To access the recordings the lecturer will make a link of the recording available on My Studies.

Attendance monitoring

Attendance and engagement with all aspects of the learning experience is key to attaining the best possible academic outcomes. All students are expected to attend and engage proactively with all learning and teaching activities on their course.

Our  is all about supporting your engagement and providing proactive support, if you appear to be experiencing difficulties fully engaging with your studies.

We monitor your attendance at timetabled sessions and your engagement with the online resources on My Studies.

Personal support

In addition to your course tutors, you’ll also be supported by:

• your Personal Academic Tutor who’ll provide advice and guidance, help you to stay on track and get the best out of your studies
• your Student Support and Guidance Tutor who’ll help you with anything from homesickness to stress, and who can signpost you to other support services
• the Disability and Learning Support team who'll help you succeed on your course if you have a disability, illness or specific learning difference (like dyslexia or ADHD) that affects your ability to study.

• Residential wellbeing
• Self-help resources
• Faith and spirituality
• Care leavers and estranged students
• Mentoring and enhanced support.
