In his lecture, Professor Santin provides an overview of his contribution to the understanding of the bio-mechanisms underlying the host response to implants and to the strategies that have been adopted to facilitate their functional integration. Pioneering biomimetic materials aiming at the complete regeneration of tissues are also presented alongside the scientific, ethical and socio-economic assessment of their future impact on our lives.
